Swivel joints are used if media should be conveyed under swivelling or pivoting movements. The swivel joints are designed, in contrast to positionable screw connections, for permanent swivel or rotating movements for a specific pressure range and a specific medium. Maximum pressure at maximum rotational speed reduces the service life. Some rotary joints require lubrication by the medium (e.g. hydraulic screw connections). Rotatable connections can noticeably improve the service life of a hose installation, as these reduce the torsion load on the hose. The use of a rotary joint in pipelines is to be avoided, as here alignment inaccuracies cannot be compensated for.
